An accessible online shop: what Shopware, Shopify & co. do (and do not)
In short
No shop system is “BFSG-compliant out of the box”. A good default theme helps, but accessibility lives in the theme, templates, plugins/apps and your content. What gets judged is the fully rendered page, not the system beneath it. An accessibility plugin (overlay) does not make your shop compliant.
“Is Shopware / Shopify accessible?” The honest answer
The question is understandable but mis-framed. No shop system is, as such, accessible or inaccessible. The system provides a framework and a default theme; accessibility only emerges from the sum of theme, customised templates, installed extensions and the content you enter. Two shops on the same system can perform very differently.
What the system dictates and what you own
For a BFSG assessment, what counts is what finally reaches the user's browser. These four layers determine the result:
- Theme / design: colour contrast, visible focus, font sizes, zoom behaviour. A great deal is decided here, often already in the purchased theme.
- Customised templates: individual changes to category, product and checkout pages easily override the good defaults of the base theme.
- Plugins / apps: sliders, popups, cookie banners, product filters and review widgets often bring their own, non-accessible markup fragments.
- Content: alt text for product images, meaningful link text, heading structure. This is entirely on you, regardless of the system.
Typical barriers by layer
In the Layer-1 range (automatically testable) the same patterns dominate across all systems: insufficient colour contrast, missing form labels, images without alt text and misused ARIA. The checkout is especially critical, because a single unusable step blocks the whole purchase. The most common errors there are summarised in “Accessible checkout: 7 common errors”.
System by system
Shopware
Current Shopware versions ship a sound semantic base, but most shops run a customised theme and numerous store extensions. That is exactly where barriers appear. Test the real, rendered front end, not a theme's marketing claim.
Shopify
Shopify themes vary widely in their accessibility, and many apps push extra markup into the page. “Accessibility” in theme marketing does not automatically mean WCAG 2.2 AA conformance. Here too, what counts is the actual state of your shop with your apps.
WooCommerce / WordPress
The modular build is both a strength and a risk: theme plus many plugins yields an individual whole whose accessibility can only be measured on the result. An accessible theme is quickly undone by an inaccessible slider or popup plugin.
Why an accessibility plugin is not the solution
For every system there are plugins promising “accessibility at the push of a button” via an overlay. That does not establish legally sound conformance and is viewed critically by disability associations and the EU Commission. Why, is set out in “Overlays vs. a real audit”. The defensible route is to fix the real barriers in theme, templates and content.
How to test your shop
Because it comes down to the rendered front end, that is exactly what we test: the finished page as it reaches your customers, independent of the system. Our free scan gives a first overview of your home page at no cost.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Shopify accessible out of the box?
- No. Shopify provides a framework, but accessibility depends on the chosen theme, the installed apps and your content. “Accessibility” in theme marketing is no guarantee of WCAG 2.2 AA conformance.
- Does an accessibility plugin make my shop BFSG-compliant?
- No. Overlay plugins do not establish legally sound conformance and are viewed critically. Accessibility must be actually implemented in the theme, templates, plugins and content.
- Which shop system is the most accessible?
- That question is misleading. No system is, as such, compliant or not. What matters is the rendered front end from theme, customisations, extensions and content. Two shops on the same system can perform very differently.
